Netflix Discovers a Death Note

d noteDeath Note, the wildly popular anime and manga series is being adapted into an American movie. While there are multiple Japanese movies, America has taken the plunge in adapting the popular series. Nat Wolff, the star of Paper Towns, has been cast as the lead character, Light Yagami. Light is a high school student that discovers a journal titled “Death Note.” If a person’s name is written into the book, the person will die from a heart attack within 40 seconds, unless their death is written in a specific manner. Light develops a god complex as he begins writing the names of criminals he believes deserve to die. This catches the attention of the world’s greatest detective (not Sherlock Holmes), who is determined to discover who the killer is and to catch them. STX and Lionsgate were among the studios who were interested in the Death Note movie, but Netflix is the top-dog that is eyeing the production. Currently, Netflix is in the final negotiations for the movie. The producers for the project are Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jason Hoffs, and Masi Oka. Doud Davision and Brian Witten are the executive producers. As far as a script, Jeremy Slater has recently written a draft. Death Note will be directed by Adam Wingard. With the recent backlash of the Akira white-washing, how will Death Note fair? Are you excited about the Death Note movie?

One-Punch Man, The Strongest Hero Returns

After the greatness that was the One-Punch Man anime, a season 2 has been announced. One-Punch Man is a manga series, turned anime, that is about a man named Saitama that becomes the strongest hero in Japan, possibly the entire Universe. He works out so much that he loses all of his hair and his emotions. He becomes a bald man with a derp face, only becoming serious when he gets interested in a fight. His training student and roommate, Genos, is a cyborg that has become a fan favorite amongst readers of the manga and watchers of the anime. He is also a favorite amongst the citizens in the One-Punch Man universe.

Regarding the storyline of the second season, rumor has it that season 2 will not follow the manga’s storyline. The upcoming season will introduce Garou, the Human Monster, as one of the villains and arch enemies of Saitama. According to HNGN, “In the manga, Garou was Bang or Silver Fang’s former disciple who eventually lost his way. What is particularly interesting is that Garou and Saitama are two sides of the same coin – just people who happen to go far beyond what humans are capable of becoming.” The other arch enemy for season 2 will be Amai Mask, the top A rank hero in the Hero Association.

One-Punch Man was created by manga writer, ONE. Season 2 will hopefully be released in 2016, but it is more likely that it will be released in early 2017.

“All Out!” Sports Anime for the Rugby Fans

Get ready for the next sports anime to get addicted to. All Out! is the anime adaptation of the rugby themed manga by Shiori Amase that began in 2013. The premiere is anticipated to be fall 2016, although an exact date has not been announced. While we at Enter the Dungeon have not read the manga, some of us are very excited about the upcoming anime. The manga has already released its 8th volume of the series in Japan. The anime is being co-produced by TMS Entertainment and Madhouse. TMS Entertainment produced anime such as D. Gray-man, Sonic X, and the Japanese anime film, Akira. Madhouse has an impressive history, as well, which includes anime such as Trigun, Death Note, and One-Punch Man. Both companies have histories with sports anime, including some that we at Enter the Dungeon have watched. If you are a fan of sports anime and want to see the strengths of both companies, check out TMS Entertainment’s Yowamushi Pedal and Madhouse’s Prince of Stride: Alternative.

Death Note Movie to be Rated-R

death-note-live-action-movie-director

Hollywood adores adaptations, why would anime be any different? Surprisingly, there are not many anime or manga movie adaptations coming out of Hollywood, but that is about to change. Death Note is one of the mangas that will be receiving an American adaptation, already having multiple live-action Japanese movies. The film’s producer, Roy Lee, spoke about the film at DICE 2016. While it has not been greenlit just yet, the movie already has a cast in place. As far as the target audience, Lee said that, “It’s definitely for adults. It is a zero chance it will be below an R-rating.” This is not surprising since the series is about a global terrorist killing people he sees as unworthy of living in the world he plans on ruling. As far as when the production will finally begin, Lee believes that it will begin this year. Death Note has an anime adaptation that can be found in its original Japanese language, as well as the English dubbing, on Netflix and Hulu. We at Enter the Dungeon loved the series and hope you do as well.
