Netflix Discovers a Death Note

d noteDeath Note, the wildly popular anime and manga series is being adapted into an American movie. While there are multiple Japanese movies, America has taken the plunge in adapting the popular series. Nat Wolff, the star of Paper Towns, has been cast as the lead character, Light Yagami. Light is a high school student that discovers a journal titled “Death Note.” If a person’s name is written into the book, the person will die from a heart attack within 40 seconds, unless their death is written in a specific manner. Light develops a god complex as he begins writing the names of criminals he believes deserve to die. This catches the attention of the world’s greatest detective (not Sherlock Holmes), who is determined to discover who the killer is and to catch them. STX and Lionsgate were among the studios who were interested in the Death Note movie, but Netflix is the top-dog that is eyeing the production. Currently, Netflix is in the final negotiations for the movie. The producers for the project are Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jason Hoffs, and Masi Oka. Doud Davision and Brian Witten are the executive producers. As far as a script, Jeremy Slater has recently written a draft. Death Note will be directed by Adam Wingard. With the recent backlash of the Akira white-washing, how will Death Note fair? Are you excited about the Death Note movie?

While the plans of adapting Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us into a movie was announced a good while ago, there has been very little news on any details regarding the state of the upcoming film. That is, until now. During an Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End press conference, IGN got to speak with Neil Druckmann, the man who wrote both The Last of Us and Uncharted 4. He has stated that Naughty Dog is only “Somewhat involved” with the development of the Uncharted movie, so they may not be very involved with The Last of Us movie, either. Speaking of the Uncharted movie, Sony currently has it on the release date of June 30, 2017. Regarding the state of The Last of Us movie, Druckmann said, “I know I said in an interview a while back we had a table read, got the script to a good place and it kind of entered development hell like these things tend to do…There hasn’t been any work done on it in over a year and a half.”

Wrestling Isn’t Wrestling

A year ago (or so), director, writer, comic book lover, and wrestling fan, Max Landis, made a video to describe just what the WWE is. Is it sports? Is it just story telling? Well, Mr. Landis answers those questions and more with his video: Wrestling Isn’t Wrestling. It is one that I (Madeleine) often show to people when I’m trying to get them to watch wrestling with me. It really is a good way to give people a good idea of what they should expect from the WWE story lines, at least some of the time. While the new era is kind of boring in my eyes, I believe that it will get better. But, that is a discussion for a different time. This video shows the story progression of wrestlers and different changes made in order to appease fans. There are many familiar faces in this video, like Seth Green, Chloe Dykstra, David Arquette, Jamie Hyneman, Adam Savage, Macaulay Culkin, Josh Peck, Sam Witwer, Darren Criss, Haley Joel Osment, and more! Anyways, here is Max Landis’ video:

Check out his other videos on his YouTube channel, Uptomyknees. I recommend his Death of Superman video, it is pretty amazing! Max Landis is the writer of the movies Chronicle and American Ultra. I hope you enjoy this video, maybe we will start sharing others that we have found entertaining, worthwhile, or just plain sharable. Who is your favorite wrestler?

Ubisoft’s VR Werewolf

Werewolves Within is Ubisoft’s new VR game that “gives friends a chance to drop into virtual reality and try to figure out who the killer is among them when it hits this fall, the company announced today,” according to Polygon. Social party games are exceptionally popular, especially amongst younger people and Werewolf is one of them. Party games like Werewolf have been popular since the 1980s and by the 1990s, they have taken many forms. Werewolf follows a simple premise. You and a group of players are villagers that have been under the attack of werewolves in the night. The only problem is that you do not know who is the werewolf or even the werewolves. It could be your best friend or your worst enemy that, for some reason, is also playing with you. Each villager has a different role within the town, be it a normal villager, a priest, or even a werewolf. Each role has its own ability. What Ubisoft is doing with Werewolves Within is making players become a part of a village with virtual reality. They will receive a cartoonish avatar and their secret role to play. One after one, players will be cast out of the village until either the werewolves win or the human villagers win. Avatars will move their mouths when you speak and the game will use your tone of voice to animate the character’s face and body movements. The D-pad can also be used to create movements like pointing at someone or crossing your arms. Werewolves Within will also include more mechanical tactics for the video game that are not just bluffing and arguing with the use of the randomly assigned roles. Polygon gives these as examples of the features in Werewolves Within:

–          A townsperson can elect a leader, giving that one person two votes.

–          A village tracker can lean in either direction and, if a werewolf is on that side of them, hear growling.

–          The watcher learns two possible roles for a player; one is true and one is false.

–          The gossip learns one possible role for one of two players.

–          The werewolf can sense each player’s role and know the identity of other werewolves.

–          A turncloak is a human who wins if the werewolves win. He or she also knows who the werewolves are, but they don’t know who he or she is.

–          A deviant can only win if he or she is killed.

The creative director for virtual reality at Ubisoft’s Red Storm studio, David Votypka, according to Polygon, said that “the team started playing around with ideas for VR games a few years ago. Ubisoft’s chief creative officer, Serge Hascoet, mentioned the classic party game formula of Mafia and asked if the team could figure out a way to get that sort of social play into a VR game.” Red Storm spent about a year and a half on Werewolves Within and will release this fall and will be “targeting all major” VR headsets, Votypka said, declining to mention which VR setups this included.

One-Punch Man, The Strongest Hero Returns

After the greatness that was the One-Punch Man anime, a season 2 has been announced. One-Punch Man is a manga series, turned anime, that is about a man named Saitama that becomes the strongest hero in Japan, possibly the entire Universe. He works out so much that he loses all of his hair and his emotions. He becomes a bald man with a derp face, only becoming serious when he gets interested in a fight. His training student and roommate, Genos, is a cyborg that has become a fan favorite amongst readers of the manga and watchers of the anime. He is also a favorite amongst the citizens in the One-Punch Man universe.

Regarding the storyline of the second season, rumor has it that season 2 will not follow the manga’s storyline. The upcoming season will introduce Garou, the Human Monster, as one of the villains and arch enemies of Saitama. According to HNGN, “In the manga, Garou was Bang or Silver Fang’s former disciple who eventually lost his way. What is particularly interesting is that Garou and Saitama are two sides of the same coin – just people who happen to go far beyond what humans are capable of becoming.” The other arch enemy for season 2 will be Amai Mask, the top A rank hero in the Hero Association.

One-Punch Man was created by manga writer, ONE. Season 2 will hopefully be released in 2016, but it is more likely that it will be released in early 2017.

Todd McFarlane said Spawn Won’t be a Superhero or Action Movie

The new Spawn, a “hard R,” according to comic creator, Todd McFarlane, will not be a superhero movie. It won’t even be an action movie. While the character is a comic character often seen as a superhero type, McFarlane plans on taking a different approach with his beloved character that has not been seen before. He has told ComicBook.com that he has finished the script. “I’ve finished the script, and I’m in the process of editing,” McFarlane told ComicBook.com. “It’s 183 pages, and [producers] usually like 120. I still think it’s going to end up being about 140, because I’m putting in details for myself.” He is putting in details for himself because he plans on directing the film himself. Regarding the genre, McFarlane said, “I’d put it more into horror/suspense/supernatural genre,” and “If you take the movie The Departed meets Paranormal Activity, something like that.” Image Comics’ Spawn would defiantly work in those types of genres, since the premise is as follows, a Marine is killed and then sent to hell where he makes a deal with the Devil, named Malebolgia. He gives up his soul to see his wife again, but he returns five years after his death. He is transformed into a demonic creature and discovers that his wife married his best friend. While Spawn is a superhero, the Spawn series can carve a new path for superhero type movies with its change in the traditional format the we have all become used to with the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the attempt DC is making to catch up.

The Real Nintendo Land

nintendo-universal

“The immersive experiences will include major attractions at Universal’s theme parks and will feature Nintendo’s most famous characters and games,” stated an official release. To be clear, this isn’t a full-on Nintendo theme park. Rather, Universal theme parks will create “spectacular, dedicated experiences based on Nintendo’s wildly popular games, characters and worlds,” Nintendo announced on March 7th. The late Satoru Iwata had said that the idea of a theme park had been rumored and discussed many times, so this isn’t something that is out of the blue. “More details will be announced in the future,” the release added, “as the Nintendo and Universal creative teams work to create specific concepts.” Temporary Monster Hunter and Biohazard, known to the West as Resident Evil, attractions will be coming since Universal Studios Japan has teamed up with Capcom.

Nintendo’s Miitomo is Fantastic!

Nintendo has finally released a mobile app that features their Mii character systems. Miitomo is Nintendo’s first attempt at a mobile app and, so far, I am loving it! Miitomo lets you create a Mii as well as create their personality and voice. While it is fairly limited in how far you can go with it, it is still a pretty nice feature and hopefully Nintendo expands Miitomo. Your Mii then asks you what your favorite food is. This Mii represents you. The more you tell him or her, the more information about yourself is cataloged. Then, you can make friends with those on your Facebook or Twitter. You can even do face-to-face friendships with the people around you that also have the app. Once you form a friendship, they can access your answers and vice-versa. Pretty much, this app is made to learn about your friends through cute little characters that represent the people using the app. These Mii characters can be dressed up in cute little outfits and you can show your style in many ways. Want to look like a sailor? Sure! What about a crazy cat-lady or a pancake? Nintendo thought of that and said yes. More clothes are coming out every so often, including logs of wood and ninjas. Some of these clothes can be won through the weird not-pachinko, but maybe a little similar, gambling game. It’s addicting, whatever it is. There is also the Miifoto feature where you can take a picture of your Mii and create a background for them. You can change their face and body position. Another feature of the Miifoto is that you can add some of your friends to the picture. This is one of the favorite, if not favorite, features of Miitomo amongst my friends. Seriously guys, download this app.

Greetings from Coup Fam! We love Miitomo!
